November 2000, Dallas, Texas
When a group of key stakeholders met in Dallas on Nov. 7-8, they paved the way for the upcoming R&D phase of the NGNGV Program. Paul Norton of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory led the 23 stakeholders through a two-day process to determine funding and the focus of the vehicle technologies. The group also discussed the communication and outreach plans and the overall NGNGV Program goals and objectives for the next four years.
The stakeholder group recommended a dual approach to launch the R&D phase: (1) implement a design concept development competition, and (2) focus on developing natural gas engine and aftertreatment technology to meet the program's targets. Both approaches will be presented to interested parties in the form of a "request for proposal" next spring.
The NGNGV Program aims to develop two prototype natural gas vehicles by 2004. To reach this ambitious goal, the stakeholder group also focused on a number of challenges that must be addressed, including EPA emissions targets and the vehicles' commercial and economic viability. The stakeholders emphasized that the vehicles need to be developed by an integrated team approach that includes the customer, chassis and engine original equipment manufacturers, and component suppliers.
