The Natural Gas Transit Users Group (TUG) provides information and assistance to transit agencies operating or considering natural gas transit buses.
Natural Gas Transit Buses
Natural gas remains the alternative fuel of choice for many transit agencies because natural gas buses:
- Produce fewer emissions than diesel-fueled buses
- Often cost less to operate and maintain
- Represent a step toward using hydrogen, another gaseous fuel.
If your agency is considering natural gas transit buses, TUG can help you locate the resources you'll need.
Technical Information and Assistance
TUG assists transit agencies by:
- Sharing lessons learned and problem-solving techniques that address common challenges faced by natural gas bus fleets
- Providing a technical forum and network for natural gas transit fleet maintenance staff
- Communicating safety issues, and codes and standards updates related to natural gas buses
- Serving as a liaison between members and natural gas vehicle/equipment manufacturers.
TUG members also can enlist the help of the U.S. Department of Energy's Clean Cities Technical Assistance Project (Tiger Teams) to solve specific problems, including:
- Vehicle performance and drivabilty
- Safety
- Maintenance
- Driver acceptance
- Fueling station design and operation
- Alternative fuel provider interaction and availability.
