Led by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Program, the Natural Gas Vehicle Technology Forum (NGVTF) is a group of government and industry stakeholders collaborating to achieve common goals through advancement of gaseous fuel vehicles and infrastructure. Gaseous fuels of interest include natural gas, hydrogen, and hydrogen-natural gas blends.
The Goals: Displacing Petroleum, Paving the Way for Hydrogen
The Natural Gas Vehicle Technology Forum advances gaseous fuel vehicle and infrastructure technology in support of two major DOE goals:
- Reduce petroleum consumption
- Provide a transition to the hydrogen economy
Gaseous fuel vehicles can also reduce emissions of regulated pollutants compared with conventionally fueled vehicles (vehicles fueled with gasoline and diesel).
An Integrated Strategy
The Natural Gas Vehicle Technology Forum employs an integrated strategy to achieve its goals. A major focus is medium- and heavy-duty engine and vehicle research and development. This work advances technology for commercially viable gaseous fuel vehicles that compare favorably with conventional counterparts in terms of cost, reliability, performance, and adherence to strict emission standards. Similarly, the Natural Gas Vehicle Technology Forum supports gaseous fuel infrastructure research and development.
The Natural Gas Vehicle Technology Forum also facilitates technology transfer activities such as government-industry technology forums, vehicle and infrastructure user groups, information dissemination, and codes and standards development. Information related to many of these activities is available on the NGVTF meetings and publications pages.
