Working with Us

NREL works in partnership with industry, universities, and government organizations to develop advanced transportation technologies and move them into the marketplace. We provide opportunities for developing technology partnerships, licensing our technology, and using our facilities.

Developing Technology Partnerships

There are a variety of ways to get involved with NREL's research activities:

  • Work collaboratively with NREL through cooperative research and development agreements. This is the most widely used means of industrial collaboration.

  • Participate in subcontracted research by responding to an active solicitation. Close to half NREL's budget goes to support DOE-directed research conducted by large and small private companies, universities, research institutes, and consultants.

  • Pay NREL to conduct research without your collaboration through work-for-others agreements. This is an effective way for industry to take advantage of NREL's expertise and unique research facilities.

  • Partake in NREL's opportunities for postdoctoral researchers and research associates interested in participating in the lab's research and development programs, initiating new areas of research, and establishing a base for ongoing collaboration.

  • Work with NREL researchers through mentored internships for undergraduate and graduate students.

Licensing Our Technology

Over the years, NREL researchers have patented a variety of transportation-related technologies. Learn about our technologies available for licensing and our licensing agreement process.

Using Our Facilities

To help advance research and/or strengthen a product's marketability, NREL's vehicles and fuels research facilities are available to industrial, university, and government researchers and students.
