The Fleet Test and Evaluation (FT&E) team works with commercial and government fleets and industry groups to test and deploy medium- and heavy-duty alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles in service. Information derived from evaluation of vehicle performance is fed back to research programs to help shape future work.
Key aspects of this work include meeting with industry stakeholders and customers to understand market factors and customer requirements, assessing the performance of alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles compared with their conventional counterparts, and disseminating unbiased information about the performance and durability of these vehicles. See Key Activities for more information about Fleet Test and Evaluation projects.
Fleet Test and Evaluation projects involve many types of vehicle technologies, including hybrid electric and fuel cell systems and fuels such as hydrogen, natural gas (CNG and LNG), biodiesel, and Fischer-Tropsch diesel. The Fleet Test and Evaluation team also evaluates technologies that reduce idling in medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. See Technology Basics for more information about vehicle technologies.
NREL's Fleet Test and Evaluation work is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. This work supports many NREL programs and is led by the Center for Transportation Technologies and Systems.
