Models and Tools

NREL offers models, tools, data, and other resources for vehicle fleet managers, researchers, developers, and others interested in the viability, analysis, and development of advanced transportation technologies and systems.

ADOPT: Automotive Deployment Options Projection Tool

Modeling tool that predicts consumer demand for different vehicle types based on income distribution and other demographic attributes in a given region. ADOPT's market predictions have been extensively validated against historical vehicle sales data. Available soon for public download.

Alternative Fuels Data Center Tools

Collection of tools—calculators, interactive maps, and data searches—that can help fleets, fuel providers, and other transportation decision-makers reduce petroleum use.

CoolSim HVAC Model

Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) model that solves energy, momentum, and continuity equations. Models of all the major components—compressor, condenser, expansion device, and evaporator—are included. Available soon for public download.

DRIVE: Drive-Cycle Rapid Investigation, Visualization, and Evaluation

Analysis tool that produces testable drive cycles from real-world vehicle data, cutting testing and analysis time.

FASTSim: Future Automotive Systems Technology Simulator

Simulation tool that provides rapid and validated fuel economy, performance, battery life, and cost calculations for different vehicle design and usage scenarios.

Fleet DNA: Vehicle Drive Cycle Analysis

Clearinghouse of medium- and heavy-duty commercial fleet transportation data for optimizing the design of advanced vehicle technologies or for selecting a technology to invest in.

National Fuel Cell Technology Evaluation Center

Off-network data center used for the secure management, storage, and processing of proprietary data from industry.

Open EI: Open Energy Information

Knowledge-sharing wiki that provides access to energy-related information, data, and applications.

Transportation Secure Data Center

Repository of detailed travel data—including demographic information and second-by-second speed profiles—from various surveys and studies. The TSDC makes these data available to support research projects while protecting individual participant privacy.
