NREL Tests Advanced Combustion Engine

Winter 2006

NREL will begin testing of a Mack/Volvo advanced diesel combustion engine at the ReFUEL Laboratory in 2006. The engine, equipped with Sturman Industries' fully-flexible hydraulic valve actuation system, allows for achieving near zero emissions through the use of advanced combustion strategies. NREL researchers will test the engine with advanced fuels to determine what fuel properties can best enable high-efficiency clean combustion (HECC) modes of operation.

This work is funded under DOE's Advanced Petroleum Based Fuels project, which investigates how new fuels and lubricants can enable transportation systems that are more efficient and that meet stringent emission standards. By using a systems approach, the research aims to improve vehicle efficiency, thereby decreasing our nation's dependence on imported petroleum products.

This engine was provided by previous project participants at Volvo Powertrain (formerly Mack), which allows NREL to continue improving fuels for advanced combustion engines in the ReFUEL Laboratory with HECC modes of operation.
