Campus

In 2003, NREL completed a 25-year General Development Vision, which balances development requirements with our mission objectives of corporate energy, environmental, and economic responsibility.

The vision provides a long-term, integrating context for the sustainable development of the NREL campus. The vision includes overall goals and strategies for the campus, and a description of NREL future directions and their impact on the sites, as well as a description of the external factors that will impact the sites.

The plan also addresses:

• Open space, building density
• Solar access
• Parking and roads
• Landscaping
• Habitat and site preservation
• Storm water management.

Science and Technology Facility

NREL recently completed the construction of the Science and Technology Facility (S&TF). The campus features that relate to building siting include:

• Orientation along an east-west axis so that windows on the north and south facades can provide natural lighting
• A butterfly roof over the office module that collects storm water and directs it to a xeriscaped landscaping irrigation system
• Retention and use of a portion the excavation soils to restore a previously disturbed area of the site.

Current Activities

With the completion of the Science and Technology Facility and the initiation of the design for the next major new building, the Research Support Facility, an administrative complex for the campus, NREL will update the General Development Vision in FY07. NREL is also initiating a parking study to further define campus parking needs over the next 25 years.
