Benjamin G. Lee, Ph.D.
Benjamin Lee earned his bachelor's degree from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 2002 and his doctorate in applied physics from Harvard University in 2009. His doctoral thesis was supervised by Professor Federico Capasso, on the topic of Quantum Cascade Lasers — semiconductor lasers operating from inter-subband electronic transitions with tunable emission in the mid-infrared. Lee spent the first half of 2009 as a Visiting Professor, in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, in Mumbai, India. He taught a semester-long course there on Semiconductor Devices and Optoelectronics. Lee joined NREL to work in the Silicon Materials and Devices Group, in the second half of 2009. At NREL, he has contributed to applied research on thin-film epitaxial Si solar cells and high-efficiency Si cells, as well as performed fundamental studies of new materials such as quantum-confined silicon nanocrystals. During 2014, he was a Visiting Scientist at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) in Germany, where he worked on a collaborative project between the institutes for high efficiency Si cells. He has four patents, in addition to numerous scientific publications. His current research interests include high efficiency silicon solar cells, advanced optics and light management for solar cells, passivated carrier-selective solar cell contacts, epitaxial growth of III-V and group IV materials, and quantum-confined materials and nanomaterials.
