NREL's Solar Energy research supports the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Technology Program.

The focus of Performance and Reliability Research and Development (R&D) at NREL is to improve photovoltaic (PV) technologies. We test modules and systems for performance, stress them both in the field and with our accelerated testing equipment, and find R&D solutions to improve PV reliability.

The types of problems observed for PV modules are quite diverse—as shown in our summary of the most common types of failures (PDF 185 KB) for each PV technology and in a review paper on the development of standard qualification tests (PDF 408 KB). Download Adobe Reader.
