The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory. It is managed and operated for DOE by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC (Alliance). Michael F. Helmstetter of MRIGlobal acts as Alliance Chair and Jeffrey Wadsworth of Battelle acts as Vice Chair. The NREL director is Dan Arvizu; he is also president of the Alliance. Arvizu oversees four directorates: Outreach, Planning & Analysis; Science & Technology; Laboratory Operations; and Commercialization & Deployment. Also reporting to Arvizu are: Internal Audit managed by Connie Johnson; General Counsel, Steve Silbergleid; and Laboratory Ombuds, Carolyn Noorbakhsh.
The Outreach, Planning, & Analysis directorate is managed by Senior Vice President Bobi Garrett. She oversees Systems Engineering & Program Integration, managed by Executive Director Neil Snyder; Grid Integration Program, managed by Vice President Steve Hauser; Strategic Planning, managed by Executive Director Sue Hock; Strategic Energy Analysis, managed by Robin Newmark; Communications & External Affairs, managed by Bob Noun; the Joint Institute for Strategic Energy Analysis, managed by Executive Director Doug Arent; and the Department of Defense programs, managed by Stephen Gorin. Hock oversees Laboratory Development, managed by Eric Manuel. Executive Director Bob Noun oversees Public Affairs, managed by Kerry Masson, and Communications, managed by Tom Stites. Gian Porro and Ron Benioff are laboratory program managers.
The Science & Technology directorate is managed by Deputy Laboratory Director Dana Christensen. He oversees Renewable Electricity & End Use Systems, managed by Associate Laboratory Director Robert Hawsey; Renewable Fuels & Vehicle Systems, managed by Associate Laboratory Director Dale Gardner; and Energy Sciences, managed by Associate Laboratory Director Ray Stults. Art Nozik serves as senior research fellow; the Research Fellows Council reports to Arvizu. Lawrence Kazmerski is the S&T Partnerships executive director. Hawsey oversees the National Center for Photovoltaics, managed by Greg Wilson; the Electricity, Resources & Building Systems Integration, managed by David Mooney; and the National Wind Technology Center, managed by Fort Felker. Dick DeBlasio is Chief Engineer. David Ginley and Robert Thresher serve as research fellows. Roland Hulstrom (solar), Brian Smith (wind energy and water power), Ron Judkoff (buildings), and David Corbus (electricity) are laboratory program managers. Gardner oversees the National Bioenergy Center, managed by Mike Cleary; Hydrogen Technologies & Systems, managed by Robert Remick; and Transportation Technologies & Systems, managed by Barb Goodman. Helena Chum serves as research fellow. Adam Bratis (biomass), George Sverdrup (fuel cells and hydrogen), and Terry Penney (vehicles) are laboratory program managers. Tom Foust is NABC Director. Stults oversees Biosciences, managed by James Brainard; Computational Science, managed by Steve Hammond; and Chemical & Materials Science, managed by Bill Tumas. Garry Rumbles, Mike Seibert, and John Turner serve as research fellows.
The Laboratory Operations directorate is managed by Deputy Laboratory Director and Chief Operating Officer Bill Glover. He oversees the following seven offices: Finance, managed by Barb Stokes; Environment, Health and Safety, managed by Maureen Jordan; Quality Management Systems and Assurance, managed by Henry Higaki; Security and Emergency Preparedness, managed by Sue Budden; Contracts & Business Services, managed by Randy Combs (acting); Information Services, managed by Jill Deem; Infrastructure & Campus Development, managed by Drew Detamore; Human Resources, managed by Penny Burton; and Site Operations, managed by Tim Peele. Director Kathleen Nawaz (acting) manages Washington Operations.
The Commercialization & Deployment directorate is managed by Senior Vice President Casey Porto. She oversees Partnership Development – Fuels, Vehicles & Transportation, managed by Executive Manager Ron Schoon; Partnership Development – Electricity, Utilities & Buildings, managed by Executive Manager Brent Rice; Commercialization & Technology Transfer, managed by Vice President William Farris; and Deployment & Market Transformation, managed by Vice President Mike Pacheco. Robert Westby (FEMP), Daniel Beckley (WIP), and Mary Werner (Integrated Deployment) are laboratory program managers. Ann Brennan oversees Market Transformation; and Integrated Applications, managed by Nancy Carlisle.
