Research Support Facility Newsroom

The Research Support Facility (RSF) is an ultra-high efficiency building and a showcase for energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. Owned by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the RSF incorporates several innovative design features and renewable energy strategies developed at NREL. The 222,000 sq. ft., LEED Platinum office building is occupied by about 800 NREL employees.

The third and final wing of the RSF is currently under construction; completion is expected at the end of 2011. The 138,000 sq. ft. expansion is being built based on lessons learned from the existing RSF, with smaller windows and a transpired solar air collector that is 50 percent larger. These changes will help increase the energy efficiency of the expansion by 17 percent.
