High School Students Compete to Represent Colorado at the 22nd Annual National Science Bowl™ in Washington, DC

Thursday, January 26, 2012

Golden, Colo., Jan. 25, 2012Why do photovoltaic cells have p-type and n-type layers? What causes stars to twinkle?
Twenty-eight teams of Colorado high school students will answer on-the-spot science and math questions at the 22nd Colorado Science Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Dakota Ridge High School.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) began the science bowl tradition in 1991 as a way to encourage high school students to explore math and science. The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Golden Field Office is again one of the major sponsors of this year’s Colorado Science Bowl.
“The Colorado Science Bowl features many of the best and brightest high school students in the nation,” said DOE Golden Field Office Manager Carol Battershell. “It provides them an opportunity to demonstrate their skills in mathematics and science, as well as inspire young people to become our next generation of engineers and scientists that will help keep our nation globally competitive.”
Students will answer rapid-fire questions with tournament rounds lasting only 16 minutes. Questions cover physics, math, biology, astronomy, chemistry, technology, earth and general sciences, and are pegged at the college freshman level. Each team is made up of four students, one alternate and a coach.
The winning team advances to the DOE National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. Apr. 26-30, where more than 450 students from 68 high schools will compete for the national title.
