Model Solar and Hydrogen Car Races Demonstrate Renewable Energy’s Future

Thursday, May 8, 2008

Middle school students from around the state will participate in the Junior Solar Sprint and Hydrogen Fuel Cell car competitions on Saturday, May 10 sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).  The competitions give students the opportunity to show their engineering and design skills by building and racing high-performance model solar and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Eighty-eight teams from 29 schools will be competing in the Junior Solar Sprint and Hydrogen Fuel Cell car competitions. Teams use either a solar cell and motor, or a fuel cell and motor, to design and build solar or hydrogen powered modern vehicles. The hydrogen cars will race on a 10-meter course, and the Junior Solar Sprint cars will race on a 20-meter course.

NREL is the U.S. Department of Energy's primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. NREL is operated for DOE by Midwest Research Institute and Battelle.
