NREL Appointments Announced

Two authorities on energy issues have been appointed to the panel that provides expert advice and independent guidance to the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

Named to serve on the NREL National Advisory Council were Merribel S. Ayres, president of Lighthouse Energy Group, a Washington, D.C.-based energy and environmental consulting firm, and Father John M. Staudenmaier, a professor at University of Detroit, Mercy, and editor of Technology and Culture.

"All of us at NREL are pleased to welcome Ms. Ayres and Father Staudenmaier to serve with the respected members of our advisory council," said NREL Director Richard Truly. "The distinguished leadership and expertise they have demonstrated throughout their professional lives will become a valuable asset to our national lab."

Ayres has been active in the business and public policy community of Washington, D.C., for more than two decades, having previously served as CEO of the National Independent Energy Producers and director of government affairs for Champion International. She is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College and Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.

Father Staudenmaier teaches, writes and speaks on the ethics, history and social implications of engineering and technology. The publication he edits, Technology and Culture, is the International Quarterly of the Society of the History of Technology.

The NREL National Advisory Council provides external counsel to the Lab director on prospective and ongoing research endeavors, business and operational issues and other initiatives. The council also monitors broader trends and anticipates changes that may affect NREL's mission. There are 21 members of the council, drawn from academia, industry and other stakeholder groups.

NREL is managed by Midwest Research Institute, Battelle and Bechtel. The lab is a leading center for research into photovoltaics, wind energy, plant- and waste-derived fuels, power and chemicals, energy-efficient buildings, advanced vehicle design, alternative fuels use and renewable hydrogen production, storage and utilization.
