A promising option for hydrogen production from renewable resources is electrolysis, in which electricity is used to disassociate water into hydrogen and oxygen.

NREL's hydrogen and fuel cells research and development activities rely on a diverse team of engineers and scientists with years of research expertise. The team employs state-of-the-art laboratory capabilities and techniques to advance the science behind emerging hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, and to demonstrate and validate new technologies and systems that are needed to move toward commercialization.
