Regional and National Integration
Energy systems integration R&D on a large-scale, regional and national level encompasses large generation technologies such as geothermal, hydropower, wind, and solar energy and covers geographically dispersed systems such as utility service territories and balancing areas. Large-scale renewable integration studies are needed to evaluate the operating and reliability impacts of higher penetrations of wind and solar energy, calculate the costs to power system operation, and evaluate methods for determining additional reserves. And because these systems operate across multiple regulatory areas and jurisdictions, integration usually requires that a number of regulatory issues be addressed.
Realizing the potential energy savings from the integration of large-scale energy system technologies requires a team approach across NREL's science and technology and market analysis teams. The laboratory's market analysis helps increase the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies by providing strategic information to stakeholders interested in rapidly changing electricity markets.
