Kara Podkaminer received her Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences from the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College in 2011. For her dissertation work, she studied the thermophilic, anaerobic bacterium Thermoanaerobacterium saccharolyticum ALK2 and its application in a thermophliic SSF process.

At NREL, Dr. Podkaminer is working on heterologous protein expression in T. reesei, looking to better understand the bottlenecks and increase protein production. This work will serve as the foundation for future expression of NREL's chimera proteins.
