Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative

The Hawai'i Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI) is a partnership between the state of Hawaii and the U.S. Department of Energy to achieve the most aggressive clean energy goals in the nation. To support this important initiative, NREL conducts research and development in the following distributed energy areas:

  • Solar resource assessment
    • Perform analysis of measured data and model development
    • Supply output data sets for photovoltaic (PV) grid integration studies
    • Deploy additional solar monitoring stations
    • Investigate use of satellite data for microclimate solar mapping studies
  • System-level integration studies
    • Support the technical review committee for the Oahu and Maui solar integration studies
    • Conduct a technical analysis of HCEI renewables (including PV, biomass, geothermal, wind, demand side, and all modified system loads), and conduct integration and transmission analysis
  • Distribution-level integration studies
    • Work with utilities and stakeholders to understand the impacts of high penetration PV on a distribution circuit on Oahu.
