Key Activities
This substation interconnects distributed wind turbines with the electric power system.
NREL's electric infrastructure R&D key activities are focused on integrating new technologies into the electric power system. Our renewable and electrical systems integration R&D supports the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Program and Wind Program. This work involves developing technologies, systems, and methods to interconnect variable renewable energy with the power grid.
Our research in advanced distribution technologies and operating concepts supports the DOE Office of Electric Delivery and Energy Reliability by developing operational concepts and technologies that will allow new technologies to be used to strengthen the power grid and improve its reliability. This work includes technology development, testing and evaluation, and the development of standards and codes.
