For years NREL has successfully maintained an outstanding record of safety and sustainability within the Department of Energy's national labs. The laboratory has supplemented this performance record with the achievement of several prestigious, internationally recognized certifications that illustrate NREL's environmental, safety, and quality leadership.

In 2011, NREL received International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001: 2004 (environment) certification and OHSAS 18001 (health and safety) certification. In addition, NREL achieved ISO 9001:2008 certification covering a portion of its operations, including Environment, Health, Safety, Security, Quality, Performance Measurement, and Requirements Management. These certifications were awarded by NSF International Strategic Registrations, Ltd.

Read the NREL certifications:

Through our comprehensive portfolio of policies, procedures, and programs, NREL incorporates environmental protection, safety, and quality management into all aspects of our work. These international certifications display NREL's commitment to excellence in environmental, safety, and quality management. They also express our commitment to our staff, the local community, and the research community as a world class research institution.

"NREL is committed to ensuring the safety and protection of our workers, visitors, the public, and our environment while conducting our mission work. Just as we are all responsible for safety at the lab, we are all also responsible for creating a culture of leadership in quality management and environmental stewardship. I was pleased to learn the audit team provided specific feedback that NREL staff are unmatched in several areas by any other DOE facility in understanding and practicing environment, safety, and quality management.”
