The Department of Energy's Office of Science and General Motors have teamed up to sponsor the National Science Bowl® competitions. The science bowls are fun fast-paced academic tournaments that test the brainpower of middle school teams on science and math topics. It is well recognized that the middle school years are the most productive time to attract students to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects. The National Science Bowl provides an opportunity for students to develop STEM skills in a non-classroom setting.
Middle School students participate in two competitions at the National Science Bowl - an academic math and science competition and a model car competition. The academic competition is a fast-paced question-and-answer contest where students answer questions about earth science, physical science, life science, math, and general science. The model car competition challenges students to design, build, and race model cars.
Top winners from the Regional Science Bowl competitions move on to compete in the National Science Bowl.
