Lawrence L. Kazmerski is Director of the National Center for Photovoltaics (NCPV) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Golden, Colorado. He received his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering in 1967, M.S.E.E. in 1968, and Ph.D. in 1970, from the University of Notre Dame. Following a postdoctoral position at the Notre Dame Radiation Research Laboratory (Atomic Energy Commission), Dr. Kazmerski joined the faculty of the University of Maine in 1971 and served as Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering. In 1977, he joined the Solar Energy Research Institute or SERI (which was later renamed NREL) as the first staff member in photovoltaics, hired specifically to establish efforts in the characterization of photovoltaic materials and devices. Kazmerski initiated SERI's first on-site laboratory operation in 1978. Before becoming the first Director of the NCPV, Kazmerski served as the Division Manager for Measurements and Characterization. Kazmerski has published more than 260 journal/proceedings papers and book chapters in the areas of solar cells, thin films, semiconductor materials and devices, surface and interface analysis, molecular beam epitaxy, proximal probe microscopies, nanoscale technology, high-temperature superconductivity, and semiconductor defects. His numerous national and international conference presentations include more than 120 invited talks. Kazmerski has received several awards for his research and contributions to solar electric science and technology, including the IEEE William R. Cherry Award and the AVS Peter Mark Memorial Award. In 2000, he was designated as an Honorary Member of the AVS for his technical and organizational contributions. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, APS, and AVS.
