Title:
National Weather Service sensors on Mili Atoll
Caption
The US National Weather Service installs and maintains hundreds of remote weather instrumentation towers in remote regions where there is American vested interest, such as in the former Pacific Trust Territory island nation Rep. Marshall Islands. Shown here, NWS installed a 25 ft. metal tower for mounting of sensors for wind, rain, and temperature measurements. The information is transmitted to satellites that relay the information to NWS Pacific weather observation offices and NWS headquarters on the US mainland. Weather patterns are thus monitored and meteorologists can issue informed weather forecasts and warnings. The remote instrumentation and transmitter are powered by a 12 volt photovoltaic panel. NWS has been using remote PV power for over a decade.
