University of Virginia took 1st Place in the Design and Livability competition. A jury of architects judged design, innovation, and aesthetics. The challenge of this contest was to successfully integrate and synthesize design and solar energy and energy efficiency technologies into a livable and delightful domestic environment.

High resolution digital file, ~17 MB; The Solar Decathlon is a new student contest sponsored by the Department of Energy. Student teams are challenged to integrate aesthetics and modern conveniences with maximum energy production and optimal efficiency. Each team will build a uniquely designed 500-ft2 -- 800-ft2 house. Solar decathletes will transport their houses to the National Mall in Washington D.C. for the competition in the fall of 2002.
