Title:
Dangling Rope Marina, Lake Powell, Utah
Caption
Each year two million visitors stop at Dangling Rope Marina, the only facility in a 90-mile stretch on Lake Powell. Dangling Rope, accessible only by water, once depended on diesel generators to supply electricity for the marina, convenience store, ranger station, and personnel housing. These noisy generators consumed 65,000 gallons of diesel fuel each year. Rangers made fuel deliveries 35 times per year, traveling 40 miles each way and posing considerable risk of an oil spill in the pristine Lake Powell.

Notes:
The environmental stripe of PV has never been more pronounced than at the Dangling Rope Marina in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area at Lake Powell, Utah. This 160 kW hybrid (photovoltaic and propane) system from Applied Power was built in 1996 and expanded in 1998. It replaced a diesel fired system. The rewards of lower energy cost, less noise and lower levels of pollution accrue on a daily basis. NCPV engineers from Sandia continue to monitor system performance.
