The Year in Research and Activities at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory - 2003
Highlights from 2003 activities at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are featured in this photo collection.

- Toyota Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle (FCHV), during a vehicle demonstration on April 29 at the National Renewable
Energy Laboratory. The FCHV, a modified mid-size Highlander sport utility vehicle, uses an electric motor
powered by a fuel cell and secondary battery. Powered by pure compressed hydrogen, the FCHV has a top
speed of more than 95 miles per hour and a range of more than 180 miles. To see other images from this
event, conduct search using advanced vehicles and visitors center in the search for box on the Text Search page.

- Secretary of Energy, Spencer Abraham and Congressman Bob Beauprez visit NREL: Abraham's
tour of NREL focused on experimental equipment such as desiccant dehumidifiers that help
remove humidity from air inside buildings more effectively than air conditioners, creating
more comfort without additional energy use. To see other images from this event, conduct
search using abraham and beauprez in the search for box on the Text Search page

- Secretary of Energy, Spencer Abraham and Congressman Bob Beauprez (R-CO 7th)
visiting the AFUF. The are standing in front of the solar demonstration house,
Spencer Abraham talks about DOE's new website. To see other images from this
event, conduct search using abraham and beauprez in the search for box on the Text Search page.

- Aerial view of the Outdoor Test Facility (OTF), Thermal Test Facility (TTF), and
Alternative Fuels User Facility (AFUF). To see other images from this shoot, conduct
search using 2003 and aerial and gretz in the search for box on the Text Search page.

- Aerial showing the visitors center. In the distance you can see the Solar Energy
Research Facility (SERF). To see other new images of the exterior of the SERF,
conduct search using 2003 and aerial and gretz in the search for box on the Text Search page.

- Solar Energy Research Facility (SERF), night shot in winter with snow.
To see other new images of the exterior of the SERF, conduct search using
2003 and serf and gretz in the search for box on the Text Search page.

- Solar Energy Research Facility (SERF), summer with wild flowers. To see other new images
of the exterior of the SERF, conduct search using 2003 and serf and gretz in the search
for box on the Text Search page.
#12807
- Working with industrial partners NREL researchers have helped to develop technology to
produce adhesives from wood bark rather than from fossil fuels. The bark or other biomass
is pyrolyzed (heated in the absence of oxygen) and phenolic compounds useful for adhesives
are produced. These adhesives can be used to produce high-performance engineered lumber.
To see other lumber samples, conduct search using manufactured lumber in the search for box on the Text Search page.

- RnE2EW van; Renewable Energy & Efficiency Education on Wheels; An educational-outreach
vehicle partnership between the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy
Laboratory and BP America Inc. To see other images of this shoot, conduct search using renew
and gretz in the search for box on the Text Search page.
