Overview of Group Research Topics Researchers and Publications

Dr. Xiliang Nie is currently working at Drexel University. He received his Ph.D in Physics from Wuhan University, Wuhan, China, in 1994. He did his postdoc work at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing, China (with Prof. Dingsheng Wang), in 1995, and at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in MIT (with Prof. Gebrand Cederas) in 1996. Since then, he has been a guest scientist working with Dr. Stefan Bluegel at the Institute of Solid State Research Center of Juelich, Juelich, Germany. He joined the CMS group in  2000. His research interests are:

  1. Developing efficient first-principles band structure code
  2. Developing simple concepts to correct the LDA bandgap error
  3. Understanding defect properties in semiconductors and insulators
  4. Predicting magnetocrystalline anisotropy of magnetic materials and their application in industry (new generation of sensors, reading head, and recording media).
He is one of the main team members in developing the FLEUR code of the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. He has published ten peer-reviewed papers including one in Science. He holds one patent in Germany on the switching of magnetization direction under external electric field and has several other patents pending.
