Amie Sluiter

Amie Sluiter (aka Amie D. Sluiter, Amie Havercamp) is a scientist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's National Bioenergy Center in Golden, Colorado.

Research Interests

Amie Sluiter began research in the biomass-to-ethanol field in 1996. She joined the Biomass Analysis Technologies team to provide compositional analysis data on biomass feedstocks and process intermediates for use in pretreatment models and techno-economic analyses. The results of wet chemical analysis provide guidance on feedstock handling, pretreatment conditions, economic viability, and life cycle analyses. Amie Sluiter has investigated a number of biomass analysis methods and is an author on 11 Laboratory Analytical Procedures (LAPs), which are being used industry-wide. She has taught full biomass compositional analysis procedures to both internal and external colleagues, including international partners. Amie Sluiter has created calculation spreadsheets to facilitate the hundreds of calculations involved in a summative mass closure analysis.

Amie Sluiter is responsible for the creation and maintenance of NREL's rapid near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic analysis methods. These methods allow analysts to predict the composition of feedstock and process intermediates at a significant time and cost reduction compared with traditional wet chemical analyses. Amie compiles wet chemical analyses on a number of biomass feedstock and intermediate types, and creates projection to latent structures (PLS) and principal component analysis (PCA) NIR models to predict constituent values. Counted among the mature NIR methods are corn stover feedstock and acid or steam pretreated corn stover. These methods, built on hundreds of compositional analyses, predict up to 14 different components present in biomass within the method uncertainties of the traditional chemical compositional methods.

Amie Sluiter is currently working to develop NIR PLS models for liquid process intermediates and process intermediate slurries. She is working to create standard NIR methods that will transfer between instruments and provide seamless constituent predictions. Amie is also working to create long-term stable instrument check points that are biomass matrix-specific, for instrument monitoring and calibration transfer.
