Alexander W Hains - Postdoc
Alexander Hains received his B.A. from St. Olaf College in 2001 with majors in Chemistry (ACS certified) and Spanish. He received his M.S. in Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 2003, where he performed research in polymers. After moving back to the Midwest, he began a graduate program in Chemistry at Northwestern University under the supervision of Professor Tobin Marks, earning his Ph.D. in 2009. His graduate research focused on interfaces in bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic photovoltaics (OPVs). More specifically, in lieu of the commonly used interfacial layer PEDOT:PSS, he implemented crosslinking organic layers at the anode/active layer interfaces in common BHJ organic photovoltaics (OPV) systems, which effectively inhibit electron recombination at the ITO and improve device performance.
Having learned much about OPV in graduate school and desiring to continue with photovoltaic research after graduation, he began a postdoctoral research position in 2009 with Dr. Brian Gregg at NREL. Here, his research will again involve interfacial modification of OPVs as well as the incorporation of carbon nanotubes into OPV devices.
