At NREL since 2008

Dr. Jang received a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from Korea University in 2008 under Prof. Kang-Jin Kim. During her time at Korea, she was involved in developing highly efficient solar cells of various types. She contributed to the characterization and synthesis of various TiO2 nanostructures including nanotubes, nanorods, and core-shell nanoparticles for solar cells prepared by the sol-gel method. She describes her experience performing research at Grätzel’s group, EPFL, Switzerland, and Dr. Nam-Gyu Park’s group, KIST, Korea, as extraordinary. Part of that experience involved studying the characteristics of new sensitizers such as ruthenium, organic, phthalocyanine, and squaraine sensitizers for the production of efficient low-cost photovoltaic devices, and fabricating solid state cells and flexible devices with Ti-foils in addition to conventional cells.

At NREL, Dr. Jang is involved in developing high-efficiency, sensitized, solid-state and liquid-junction nanostructured solar cells based on mesoporous photosystems. The sensitizers include quantum-scale semiconductors and molecular dyes. She conducts research in designing, fabricating, and characterizing sensitized porous nanocrystalline semiconductor thin films and the associated solar cells, and she investigates possible factors limiting solar cell efficiency and stability. This research is part of an integrated program involving both applied and basic research. In addition, she contributes to parallel research aimed at establishing a basic understanding of charge transport and interfacial phenomena governing cell performance.

Current Research Activities

  • Designing, fabricating, and characterizing nanostructured photoelectrode materials and charge-conducting phases for advanced dyesensitized solar cells
  • Assembling devices and evaluating their photovoltaic and stability properties
  • Assessing the material/architecture/charge-conducting phase-device property relationship.
