Maps and Atlases

NREL has developed a variety of maps and other geographical resources to help energy project developers make informed decisions about how and where to implement sustainable energy technologies. These provide valuable insights into local conditions, including available resources and infrastructure, as well as potential demand.

Deployment and Market Data

NREL has also developed geographic tools and maps that provide insights into the distribution of technology in the marketplace, and the siting of new projects. Accessible via the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Web site or NREL's, these resources include:

  • Installed U.S. Wind Capacity
  • TransAtlas
  • Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center mapping tools
  • State Assessment for Biomass Resources
  • BioPower.

Renewable Resource Data

Adequate renewable energy resources are the foundation for any successful project. Data sources for wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal resources are maintained by NREL's Renewable Resource Data Center.

International Maps

NREL has also developed resource maps and toolkits for several countries and regions around the world. See our international activities site for international resource maps.
