Solar Technology Application

The United States accounts for approximately 8% of the photovoltaic capacity installed worldwide through 2008—about 1,106 MW, according to the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) 2008 Annual Report on U.S. Solar Energy Markets. Additionally, 51% of the 12.7 GW of concentrating solar power announced or proposed worldwide through 2015 is located in the United States.

NREL's research aims to reduce the cost of solar energy to be competitive with fossil fuels by 2020. NREL helps promote economic development and adoption of advanced solar technologies through DOE's Solar Decathlon and Solar America Cities programs.
