Biomass Technology Application
According to the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) report 2007 Year in Review: U.S. Ethanol Industry: The Next Inflection Point (PDF 1.6 MB), approximately 250 million dry tons of biomass will be accessible by 2017, ramping up alongside the cellulosic ethanol industry. Download Adobe Reader.
Cellulosic ethanol, along with other renewable biofuel technologies, will help meet the requirements of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which established a 36-billion-gallon mandate for biofuels by 2022.
To advance these goals, NREL serves as the lead laboratory for the National Bioenergy Center. This center maintains focused R&D efforts to overcome barriers to widespread biofuel adoption and conducts integration and production projects that focus on achieving commercial viability.
