Deployment Programs

NREL supports several U.S. Department of Energy programs that put resources on the ground to facilitate clean energy deployment. Energy project leaders face multiple challenges in implementing new energy technologies. Technologies may be unfamiliar to project planners. Multiple players may have to come together to form new business relationships. Funding streams may be different from the norm. And businesses or localities may be responding to new federal, state, and local requirements. The following DOE deployment programs offer a first stop for project developers who need help overcoming these barriers:

  • The Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) implements legislation and executive orders designed to reduce energy consumption in the federal sector and provides a wide range of resources for federal facility and fleet managers.

  • The State Activities and Partnerships Web site provides information about state projects and resources.

  • The Tribal Energy Program promotes tribal energy sufficiency, economic growth, and employment on tribal lands by developing renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

  • Building America provides best practices for builders and sponsors the Builders Challenge, which provides incentives and support for builders who commit to high energy efficiency techniques.

  • Clean Cities activity supports nearly 90 regional voluntary public/private coalitions that provide technical experts, project support, and access to funding for technologies, including alternative fuels and advanced vehicles, fuel blends, fuel economy, hybrid vehicles, and truck idle reduction.

  • Solar America Cities provides financial and technical assistance to 25 cities pursuing city-wide solar energy initiatives.

  • Wind Powering America brings pilot projects, best practices, and project development support to areas with high wind potential but low market activity.
