Hawaii Biofuels Sustainability

The laboratory's sustainability analysis spans both international and national locations. Hawaii has set a goal for 70% clean energy by 2030. With heavy imports of virtually all energy, NREL analysts are helping Hawaii evaluate options for reducing imports, meet the state's clean energy goals, and effectively use natural resources within the stringent local environment and among cultural concerns.

NREL analysts are focusing on how to improve a biomass resource that is insufficient to meet transportation-sector demands. Given Hawaii's location in the Pacific, biofuels could be imported to the state from a number of locations and sources:

  • Brazilian ethanol
  • Other Central and South American providers
  • Indonesian palm oil
  • China, India

As a result, NREL analysts will help Hawaii meet its transportation demands in a "clean" and sustainable manner.
