Energy Analysis Seminar Series

Mark your calendar! The EERE Planning, Budget and Analysis Office and NREL Strategic Energy Analysis Center host analytical seminars on the second Thursday of every month. Topics focus on new and innovative renewable energy and energy efficiency analysis strategies, models, and technologies in development or recently completed. The regular presentation takes place at NREL's Golden, Colorado, office.

If attending in person, RSVP to: Rachel Gelman, 303-384-7322. For visitors without an NREL badge, please RSVP the first and last name to rachel.gelman@nrel.gov at least two days prior to the seminar and indicate whether you will be arriving as a visitor in Golden, Colorado.

This seminar is also offered via conference call or Internet conferencing. After accessing the Web conference, you will need to provide conference number PW7769964 and Conference/Meeting Passcode 3862417. You also can join the event directly through the conference Web site. To access by phone, call 1-888-790-1958 — the passcode is 3862417.

Note to Mac Users: Firefox is not a supported browser, please use Safari when accessing the conference Web site.

We request that all participants mute their phones by pressing *6 (unmuting for Q&A is also *6). Please be courteous to other participants and disconnect your call rather than putting our call on hold; if your hold function features background music, you will be disconnected.

Note: An RSVP is required two days to ensure that we have enough phone lines and/or seats. The speaker will present from the Golden, Colorado, office.

NREL's Strategic Energy Analysis Center (SEAC) and DOE/EERE's Office of Planning, Budget, and Analysis (PBA) will present a seminar discussing the need to identify best practices and deliver quality tools to perform in-depth building performance analysis. Local, state, and government agencies are establishing increasingly aggressive performance targets. Ellen Franconi, a senior consultant with Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), will summarize the key events of the recent Building Energy Modeling (BEM) Summit and highlight the work plans created to support the future of energy modeling. DOE's Amir Roth will present the department's stance on the current state of BEM and the role of DOE-funded tools as well as respond to the next steps identified for the industry at the summit.

Ellen Franconi, Ph.D., is a senior consultant with RMI. She holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Building Systems Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She has worked in the building energy field and performed building simulation analysis for nearly 25 years. Her work has evolved with the industry to support research, utility demand-side management programs, measurement and verification, and integrated design assistance. Currently, she serves as co-chair of the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol Committee. She is a board member of the International Building Performance Simulation Association. She recently finished a 5-year term on the U.S. Green Building Council Energy & Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group. Ellen frequently speaks at conferences and provides building energy modeling training.

Amir Roth, Ph.D., is the acting program manager for building performance simulation tools at DOE's Building Technologies Program. He was previously with the University of Pennsylvania as an associate professor in the Computer and Information Science department and a former chair of the undergraduate computer science program. He has also worked as a software engineer at Microsoft and a research engineer at Intel. He is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE); and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
