More About the Energy Analysis Forum

The Forum's Purpose
The First NREL Energy Analysis Forum will identify and summarize analytic needs and approaches related to the expansion of renewable power generation. To accomplish this central objective, featured speakers and panelists will review the status of renewable power systems development in regional electricity markets and direct focused discussions on key analytic issues including transmission, intermittency, and policy interactions. The Forum discourse addresses issues related to renewables as well as research methods and tools.

Focus and Topics
The two-day forum will center on the role of renewables in regional power markets. A combination of presentations and structured round-table discussions, the forum sessions include:

  • Overview of the US Electricity Markets and Renewable Energy Technologies
  • Key Regional Perspectives, Outlooks, and Issues
  • Critical Hurdles for Renewables: Transmission, Intermittency, and Policy
  • Forum Summary and Critical Analytic Needs

The final session will allow participants to contribute to the formulation of recommendations for future analyses to support the expanding use of renewables in electricity markets.

Intended Outcomes
Keeping the purpose of the Forum in mind, the Forum will:

  • Establish an analytical agenda through an interactive discussion amongst all Forum participants.
  • Promote cooperative and collaborative analytic efforts in this area of energy analysis
  • Create a better shared understanding of analyses related to renewable power generation
  • Produce a brief summary report on the Forum issues, discussions, and findings.
