Organizational Objectives – Analysis
Since 1908, the nation's governors have worked together through the National Governors Association (NGA) to deal collectively with issues of public policy and governance. The association's mission is to support the work of the governors by providing a bipartisan forum to help shape and implement national policy, to implement domestic programs, and to solve problems. The members of the National Governors Association include the governors of the 50 states; the commonwealths of the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands; and the territories of American Samoa and Guam. NGA is the only national organization of, by, and for the nation's governors.
As CEOs of their states, governors expect their staff and advisers to generate creative solutions to problems, to reduce or eliminate barriers to change, and to produce results as soon as possible. They want to know what works, what does not, and what lessons can be learned from others grappling with the same problems.
The NGA Center for Best Practices (NGAC) is designed to respond to their needs. NGA has the ability to identify peers struggling with similar issues, bring them customized technical assistance that responds to their needs, and provide resources.
The center is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation with its own board of directors. The center's board is chaired by the vice chair of NGA and is evenly balanced with two Republicans and two Democrats. As a 501 (c)(3), the center staff does not participate in any lobbying activities.

The NGA Center provides information to governors' offices related to energy efficiency and renewable energy policies and innovations. This may include sharing information or reports on issues including biofuel resource potential, electric transmission, demand response programs, partnership opportunities with industry, and/or any other energy-related topics of concern to governors and their senior energy policy advisers.
