Organization Chart (Text Version)

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory. It is managed and operated for DOE by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC (Alliance). Tom Fleener of MRIGlobal is Alliance Chair of the Board and Ronald Townshend of Battelle is Vice Chair. The NREL director is Dan Arvizu; he is also president of Alliance. Arvizu oversees three directorates: Strategic Programs & Partnerships; Science & Technology; and Laboratory Operations. Also reporting to Arvizu are Internal Audit managed by Connie Johnson; General Counsel, Steve Silbergleid; and Laboratory Ombuds, Donna Louden.

The Strategic Programs & Partnerships directorate is managed by Deputy Lab Director Bobi Garrett. She oversees Systems Engineering & Program Integration, managed by Director Neil Snyder; Strategic Energy Analysis, managed by Robin Newmark; the Joint Institute for Strategic Energy Analysis, managed by Executive Director Doug Arent; Energy Systems Integration, managed by Ben Kroposki; Planning & Performance Management, managed by Director Eric Manuel; Innovation Partnering & Outreach managed by Associate Lab Director Bill Farris. Farris oversees Public Affairs, managed by Director Kerry Masson; Communications, managed by Director Tom Stites; and Technology Transfer, managed by Kristin Gray. Steve Gorin (DoD Programs), Gian Porro (Analysis), and John Barnett (International) are laboratory program managers. Partnership Development – Electricity, is managed by Executive Manager Brent Rice.

The Science & Technology directorate is managed by Deputy Laboratory Director Dana Christensen. He oversees Energy Systems Integration Facility, managed by Dave Post; Renewable Electricity & End Use Systems, managed by Associate Laboratory Director Robert Hawsey; Renewable Fuels & Vehicle Systems, managed by Associate Laboratory Director Barb Goodman; Deployment & Market Transformation, managed by Associate Laboratory Director Mike Pacheco; and Energy Sciences, managed by Associate Laboratory Director Ray Stults.

Hawsey oversees the National Center for Photovoltaics, managed by Director Greg Wilson; Electricity, Resources & Building Systems Integration, managed by Director Chuck Kutscher (acting); and the National Wind Technology Center, Fort Felker. Ron Judkoff (Buildings), David Corbus (Electricity), Tom Williams (Geothermal), David Mooney (Solar), Brian Smith (Wind and Waterpower), are laboratory program managers – Dick DeBlasio is Chief Engineer.

Pacheco oversees Market Transformation, managed by Director Ann Brennan; and Integrated Applications, managed by Director Nancy Carlisle. Robert Westby (FEMP), Daniel Beckley (Integrated Deployment and WIP), and Mary Werner (WFO) are laboratory program managers.

Goodman oversees the National Bioenergy Center, managed by Director Tom Foust; Hydrogen Technologies & Systems, managed by Director Chris Gearhart; and Transportation Technologies & Systems, managed by Matt Thornton (acting). Adam Bratis (biomass), Keith Wipke (fuel cells and hydrogen), and Kevin Walkowicz (acting – vehicles) are laboratory program managers. Partnership Development is managed by Executive Manager Ron Schoon. Stults oversees Biosciences, managed by Director Rich Greene; Computational Science, managed by Director Steve Hammond; and Chemical & Materials Science, managed by Director Bill Tumas.

The Laboratory Operations directorate is managed by Deputy Laboratory Director and Chief Operating Officer Kenneth Powers. He oversees the following eight offices: Finance, managed by Director Barb Stokes; Environment, Health and Safety, managed by Director Maureen Jordan; Quality Management Systems and Assurance, managed by Director Henry Higaki; Security and Emergency Preparedness, managed by Director Sue Budden; Contracts & Business Services, managed by Director Randy Combs; Office of the CIO, managed by Director Jill Deem; Human Resources, managed by Director Penny Burton; and Site Operations, managed by Director Tim Peele.
